Abstract

Researchers and scientific community have been motivated by current trends in the area of biosensing for development of cost effective bio analytical instruments that are label-free and miniaturization of the same. Biosensors are chemical sensing devices that quantify or detect biological molecule. In this chapter a comparison of two different structures of the micro-cantilever beams for the application in biosensing has been demonstrated. The proposed devices have been tested considering the HIV molecules as the target analyte that works on the mechanism of the displacement due to adsorption and absorption between HIV molecule and the diaphragm. The proposed device was designed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The diameter of the circular diaphragm was considered to be 150 µm and the size of the square diaphragm was 84.64 µm 2 . 218 To investigate the effect of length and width of the cantilever on biosensing application, the length and width were varied from 200 to 400 µm and from 75 to 150 µm, respectively. The geometric dimensions with the best deflection that can be employed in micro-cantilever biosensor applications are circular diaphragm having length 400 µm and width 75µm showing a displacement of 12.95 µm.
