Unraveling the Metabolic Complexities of Gaucher's Disease and Its Correlation with Parkinson's Disease
Abstract
Gaucher disease is a rare and complicated genetic disorder marked by a GBA gene mutation that causes glucocerebroside buildup. It has been observed that individuals with Gaucher gene mutation are more prone to acquire Parkinson’s disease, with up to 9% cases. According to reports, there are between 1:40,000 to 1:60,000 births worldwide, bearing a 34,401,99.2 USD economic burden. Raising awareness of Gaucher’s illness is essential since a delayed diagnosis could result in needless invasive procedures such as bone marrow biopsies and permanent consequences (primarily skeletal). Symptoms of the disease can appear in various ways and impact multiple organs and tissues. Substrate reduction and enzyme replacement are the mainstays of the disease’s therapy. Research in the field of Gaucher disease is focused on advancing our understanding of the condition, improving diagnostic methods, and exploring novel treatments. 238 Genetic and prenatal testing can help identify the disease in individuals and families, enabling early intervention and management.
