Evidence-Based Pharmacist Care (Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Impact): Pancreatitis
Abstract
Pancreatitis, including both acute and chronic forms, is a serious inflammatory condition of the pancreas that poses significant clinical, economic, and humanistic challenges. This chapter explores the integral role of evidence-based pharmacist care in the prevention, management, and long-term support of patients with pancreatitis. Clinically, pharmacists contribute to early recognition of symptoms, appropriate pharmacologic therapy, supportive care, management of complications, and nutritional guidance. Their involvement helps optimize treatment regimens, prevent recurrence, and enhance patient safety. Economically, pharmacist-led interventions reduce healthcare costs by minimizing unnecessary drug use, preventing hospital readmissions, and ensuring cost-effective therapy. From a humanistic perspective, pharmacists play a key role in patient education, improving adherence, addressing lifestyle modifications such as alcohol cessation, and enhancing quality of life. The chapter also high-lights key research findings, facilitators and barriers to pharmacist engagement, and the use of digital tools to support personalized care. Ultimately, pharmacists are positioned as essential healthcare providers in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care for pancreatitis management.
