Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) remains a significant global healthcare challenge with profound clinical, economic, and humanistic implications. This chapter explores the multifaceted impact of UGIB and emphasizes the indispensable role of pharmacists in its management. Clinically, pharmacists enhance patient care through medication reconciliation, risk assessment, prevention of drug interactions, and optimization of pharmacotherapy, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality. Economically, their interventions help lower healthcare costs by promoting costeffective medication use, reducing hospital stays and readmissions, and preventing adverse drug events. From a humanistic perspective, pharmacists contribute to improved quality of life, health literacy, medication adherence, and patient satisfaction through patient education and counseling. The chapter also highlights evidence from research supporting 150 pharmacist-led interventions and provides actionable recommendations to overcome existing barriers and strengthen the impact of pharmacists in UGIB management. By integrating pharmacists into multidisciplinary teams, healthcare systems can achieve better clinical outcomes, economic efficiency, and patient-centered care in the management of UGIB.
