Abstract

Pharmacists play a critical role in gout and hyperuricemia management by applying evidence-based interventions to improve clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes. The chapter outlines gout 2 pathophysiology, epidemiology, and risk factors, followed by non-pharmacologic (lifestyle, diet) and pharmacologic strategies for acute flares (NSAIDs, corticosteroids, colchicine) and long-term urate-lowering therapy (allopurinol, febuxostat, uricosurics). Special populations (renal impairment, pregnancy, elderly) are considered. Through protocol-driven titration, adherence support, education, monitoring, and cost-effective drug selection, pharmacists optimize therapy, enhance quality of life, and reduce costs. Innovative models (telepharmacy, electronic reminders) address adherence barriers and knowledge gaps, and demonstrate cost savings to optimize patient-centered care effectively.
