Abstract

Evidence-based pharmacist care plays a critical role in improving outcomes for patients with central nervous system (CNS) infections across clinical, economic, and humanistic domains. Clinical pharmacists contribute to early recognition and precise antimicrobial selection, optimize dosing through pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic principles, and monitor for drug-related problems such as adverse events and interactions. Economic benefits include significant cost savings via medication-use evaluations, generic substitution, reduced length of hospital stay, and prevention of readmissions. Humanistic advantages arise from targeted patient education, counseling on adherence strategies, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to address psychological and social impacts of CNS infections. Published trials and retrospective analyses demonstrate that pharmacist interventions reduce mortality rates, shorten hospitalization by over one day on average, and save thousands of dollars per patient. Key facilitators—such as participation in antibiotic stewardship committees, use of digital health tools, and continual professional development— enhance implementation, while regulatory constraints and reimbursement challenges remain barriers. Standardized metrics and structured protocols are recommended to sustain and expand pharmacist-led care for CNS infections.
