Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a major public health challenge worldwide, requiring lifelong therapy, substantial healthcare resources, and holistic support. This chapter comprehensively examines the clinical, economic, and humanistic impact of pharmacist-led care in HIV management. Clinically, pharmacists optimize antiretroviral therapy (ART), ensure medication adherence, manage drug–drug interactions and side effects, and provide education and preventative services such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) counseling and rapid diagnostic testing. Economically, their interventions lead to cost reductions by improving adherence, minimizing drug interactions, reducing hospitalizations, and promoting cost-effective treatment alternatives. From a humanistic perspective, pharmacists play a key role in enhancing patients’ quality of life by addressing stigma, supporting mental health, promoting health literacy, and improving treatment satisfaction and trust in care. Research supports the positive outcomes associated with pharmacist care, though barriers such as societal stigma, training gaps, and regulatory constraints persist. Strengthening pharmacists’ roles and integrating them more deeply into multidisciplinary healthcare teams can significantly improve outcomes in the management of Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
