Abstract

This chapter examines the vital role of pharmacists in managing hepatitis through a comprehensive evidence-based framework encompassing clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes. Clinically, pharmacists enhance hepatitis care through medication therapy management, patient education, vaccination, lifestyle counseling, and monitoring for liver complications. Their interventions help prevent disease progression, improve adherence, and optimize therapeutic outcomes. Economically, pharmacist-led strategies significantly reduce healthcare costs by preventing hospitalizations, encouraging use of cost-effective treatments, and minimizing medication errors. Indirect benefits include improved workplace productivity and reduced disease transmission through prevention programs. On the humanistic front, pharmacists improve patients’ quality of life (QoL), knowledge, and satisfaction by addressing stigma, counseling on self-care, and promoting adherence. Barriers to pharmacist-led care—such as limited scope of practice and time constraints—are acknowledged, along with facilitators like accessibility, training, and interprofessional collaboration. The chapter concludes by advocating for integration of pharmacists into hepatitis care teams to maximize clinical outcomes, economic sustainability, and patient-centered care.
