Evidence-Based Pharmacist Care (Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Impact): Pneumonia
Abstract
Pneumonia remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, imposing significant clinical, economic, and humanistic burdens. This chapter explores the vital role of evidence-based pharmacist care in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of pneumonia. Pharmacists optimize antibiotic use, ensure medication adherence, support vaccination campaigns, and counsel patients, contributing to improved clinical outcomes such as symptom relief, reduced complications, and lower mortality rates. Economically, pharmacist interventions enhance cost-effective drug utilization, prevent readmissions, and minimize healthcare expenditures. Humanistically, they improve patients’ quality of life, promote health literacy, and elevate satisfaction through personalized education and support. Research underscores the multifaceted contributions of pharmacists in antimicrobial stewardship, therapeutic drug monitoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Despite challenges such as limited prescribing authority and scope-of-practice constraints, pharmacists remain key healthcare providers in pneumonia care. Strengthening their role through policy reforms, collaborative practice, and digital health integration can enhance patient outcomes and system efficiency globally.
