Evidence-Based Pharmacist Care (Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Impact): Psoriasis
Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder with significant clinical, economic, and humanistic implications. This chapter explores the comprehensive role of pharmacists in the evidence-based management of psoriasis. Pharmacists contribute to improving clinical outcomes through medication optimization, patient education, adherence promotion, and adverse event monitoring. Their involvement supports early intervention, disease control, prevention of complications, and achievement of therapeutic goals. Economically, pharmacist-led interventions enhance cost-effectiveness by promoting appropriate therapy selection, minimizing hospitalizations, and supporting biosimilar use. Indirect costs, such as work absenteeism and reduced productivity, are mitigated through educational and lifestyle interventions. On the humanistic front, pharmacists enhance patients' quality of life by addressing stigma, offering emotional support, and fostering better health knowledge and engagement. The chapter also outlines recommendations to advance evidence-based pharmacist care through training, inter-professional collaboration, digital tools, and addressing barriers to implementation. Overall, pharmacist interventions in psoriasis care yield substantial clinical, economic, and psychosocial benefits, reinforcing their critical role in modern healthcare.
