Evidence-Based Pharmacist Care (Clinical, Economic, and Humanistic Impact): Skin Allergy and Rashes
Abstract
Skin allergies and rashes, ranging from contact dermatitis to drug-induced reactions, impose significant clinical, economic, and humanistic burdens. This chapter explores the multifaceted role of pharmacists in the evidencebased management of these conditions. Clinically, pharmacists contribute through early identification, medication review, OTC recommendations, patient education, and appropriate referrals. These interventions enhance treatment outcomes, prevent complications, and ensure safe and effective therapy use. Economically, pharmacist care helps reduce costs by promoting early detection, optimizing medication regimens, improving adherence, and recommending cost-effective therapies, thereby minimizing hospitalizations and productivity losses. Humanistically, pharmacists play a crucial role in enhancing patients’ quality of life by addressing stigma, improving medication adherence, reducing symptom severity, and empowering patients with knowledge. Despite barriers such as time constraints and scope-of-practice limitations, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to provide accessible, patient-centered care. Their integration into multidisciplinary teams is essential to improving dermatological health outcomes and healthcare system efficiency.
