Abstract

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition among aging men that significantly impacts clinical outcomes, economic resources, and patients’ quality of life. This chapter explores the vital role of evidence-based pharmacist care in the holistic management of BPH. Clinically, pharmacists contribute to prevention through lifestyle counseling, support accurate assessment, and optimize medication use including alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. They monitor therapeutic efficacy, manage drug-related problems, and provide post-surgical care. Economically, pharmacist interventions reduce healthcare costs by promoting cost-effective therapies, ensuring medication adherence, minimizing hospital admissions, and encouraging the use of generics. Humanistically, pharmacists improve quality of life by reducing urinary symptoms, enhancing health literacy, addressing misconceptions, and boosting patient satisfaction through education and counseling. The chapter also addresses facilitators and barriers to effective pharmacist involvement and recommends digital health, 182 collaborative care models, and policy reforms to strengthen pharmacist integration. Overall, pharmacists are pivotal in delivering comprehensive, cost-effective, and patient-centered care for BPH.
