Investments and Trade Patterns Among BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Global South
Abstract
This chapter critically investigates the shifting contours of investment and trade dynamics among BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and the wider Global South, emphasizing their increasing interdependence and the strategic recalibration of economic relations within an evolving post-unipolar world order. Against the backdrop of intensifying geopolitical flux and growing disenchantment with Westerncentric trade architectures, these emerging alliances have progressively foregrounded intra-bloc economic engagement, South–South cooperation, and the pursuit of alternative development pathways. The analysis engages with the underlying structural trajectories, sectoral alignments, and policy instruments that shape investment flows and trade interlinkages, while also scrutinizing the asymmetries, governance constraints, and institutional inertia that impede deeper economic convergence. Drawing upon empirical datasets and cross-regional case comparisons, this chapter highlights the catalytic role of regional mechanisms—such as the BRICS New Development Bank, SCO economic platforms, and a proliferating network of bilateral trade accords—in fostering macroeconomic resilience, expanding market access, and subverting entrenched hierarchies in the global trade regime. It contends that, notwithstanding persistent challenges, the converging geoeconomic strategies of these blocs embody a 268 nascent paradigm rooted in multipolarity, reciprocity, and a more just and balanced global distribution of economic influence.
