Abstract

This chapter undertakes a rigorous comparative analysis of the developmental trajectories of China and India since 1980, with particular emphasis on their contrasting policy paradigms, institutional architectures, and resultant economic outcomes. Although both nations initiated liberalization and reform in the closing decades of the 20th century, China pursued a state-centric, export-driven growth model characterized by centralized planning and strategic industrial policy. In contrast, India adopted a more incremental and heterodox approach, shaped by democratic imperatives, structural pluralism, and federal constraints. The analysis interrogates a spectrum of developmental indicators— including GDP growth, industrialization, poverty reduction, human capital formation, and technological advancement—within the broader political, societal, and geopolitical milieus that have shaped each country’s evolution. It further examines the differential impacts of governance structures, foreign investment regimes, and global economic integration in sculpting the respective ascents of China and India on the world stage. Despite China’s accelerated economic transformation and infrastructure-driven modernization, persistent challenges—such as income inequality, ecological degradation, and regional imbalances—remain salient in both contexts. Drawing on empirical evidence and scholarly discourse, this chapter contends that while China has demonstrably outpaced India in quantitative terms of economic development, India’s democratic resilience, institutional pluralism, and demographic dividend may confer distinct advantages for sustainable and inclusive long-term growth. 282 Ultimately, the comparative experiences of these two Asian giants illuminate the intricate interplay between state capacity, institutional configuration, and developmental strategy in shaping the trajectories of emerging economies within the Global South.
