Abstract

Biofloc is a new sustainable technology that has great potential for fish production. The demand for aquatic food is increasing with growing global population, so to fulfil this demand the aquaculture is intensifying at a much faster rate which leads to more waste generation. Managing the wastes generated is an emerging issue for environmental safeguard. Biofloc technology works on the principle of nutrient recycling, which recycles the waste generated to natural food for fish using heterotrophic bacteria via complex bio-pathways. By this, the feed costs can be reduced by up to 30%, resulting in higher profitability. It is also a water quality management tool that uses microbes to convert detritus waste into consumable flocs. This system also supports higher stocking densities, 414 improves growth, immunity, and digestive activity of digestive enzymes. This technology encompassed sustainable aquaculture production with low cost and technical demands. Biofoc also helps in achieving some of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
