Abstract

This introductory chapter establishes a robust conceptual framework for comprehending sustainable and inclusive economic development in the contemporary global context. It offers a critical interrogation of orthodox, growth-centric paradigms, highlighting their inadequacies in addressing structural inequities and ecological degradation. In their place, the chapter advocates a multidimensional development approach that harmoniously integrates environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic resilience. It elucidates how inclusive development strategies confront entrenched disparities—such as income inequality, gender-based exclusions, and regional asymmetries—while concurrently affirming the imperative of ecological stewardship in the face of escalating climate crises. Anchored in the evolving landscape of global policy realignments, multilateral compacts such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the rise of South–South cooperation, the analysis positions sustainability and inclusiveness as co-constitutive imperatives. The chapter further underscores the critical role of participatory governance, institutional innovation, and adaptive policy architecture in forging transformative development trajectories that are not only economically robust but also socially equitable and ecologically sustainable.
