Abstract

Fuel cells are increasingly appealing as energy sources for various applications, such as electric vehicles and hybrid energy systems. They produce no pollutants and their output remains constant regardless of environmental conditions, unlike photovoltaic cells and wind energy systems. The specifications of electric vehicles and fuel cells must be taken into account because a high gain DC–DC converter is required to match the energy level of both. In fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), the high gain DC–DC converter connecting the fuel cell to the DC bus is a critical component for managing power delivery and converter stability. To reduce costs, this converter should be designed and operated to achieve a high efficiency, high voltage ratio, and compact form factor. The conventional DC–DC boost converter is generally unsuitable for FCV applications due to several limitations, such as its lower efficiency. Additionally, recent studies have shown that the input current ripple in boost converters can negatively impact the lifespan of fuels. This chapter presents various high-gain DC–DC converter topologies along with their design considerations, emphasizing their performance in fuel cell vehicle applications. 136 The proposed converter topologies, show their effectiveness in addressing critical issues such as efficiency, input current ripple, and overall suitability for fuel cell integration.
