Abstract

Epithelial salivary gland malignancies represent one of the most complex diseases in head and neck oncology, due to their low incidence and heterogeneity in microscopic appearance, clinical behaviour and underlying molecular biology. The 5th edition World Health Organization (WHO) 2024 classification of head and neck tumours includes 21 distinct histological subtypes for malignant salivary gland tumours ( Table 203.1 ). 1 Since the last edition, the molecular biology forming the basis of salivary oncogenesis has become widely reported, with many salivary gland neoplasms shown to harbour tumour type-specific rearrangements (translocations/mutations).
