Abstract

The field of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology has seen substantial growth due to advances in congenital heart disease treatments, leading to increased survival rates and higher demand for specialized care. However, this has coincided with a shortage of pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, with many institutions actively recruiting to fill these roles. A 2022 survey by the Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council (PALC) revealed that nearly 40% of pediatric anesthesiology departments were trying to hire more specialists, but the supply of trained professionals falls short of the demand. This shortage is compounded by an aging workforce, with many faculty members contemplating leaving the specialty. In response, the PALC and Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society (CCAS) formed a task force to assess the current challenges within the field, focusing on staffing, work environment, and career development. The survey highlighted a substantial gap between the growing demand for pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists and the limited number of fellows being trained. The study by Deutsch and colleagues calls for urgent improvements in recruitment, retention, and professional development to ensure that the specialty can meet future needs. With the anticipated shortage of practitioners, the field requires better support systems to maintain a sustainable workforce in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology.
