Abstract

Appetites I Have Inherited is a conversation between two Mexican artists, an actor and dancer, who appeared in the 1964 Hollywood film Night of the Iguana. The John Huston–directed film, based on a Tennessee Williams play, was filmed in the Mexican isle of Mismaloya. In the film, the two artists spoke no lines, but only danced around in speedos and went night swimming with a US American resort owner played by Ava Gardner. In this play, however, Adonis and Adán are well aware of their talent, despite the industry’s desire to cast them in lesser roles. They exchange information and channel this deep knowledge to charge their ascribed one-dimensional roles. They comprise not a docile or conniving duo that one might expect from a Hollywood treatment, but instead a pair of amorous men whose shared kiss tops the signifying force of a clichéd screen kiss with Gardner.
