Abstract

Puto is a dystopian comedy set in a militarized and segregated Los Angeles of the near future. It follows the activities of Puto, an art photographer and underground counterfeiter, as he assists members of a communist cell and looks for his missing boyfriend and laptop. In this dystopia, the US-Mexico border has been closed and immigrants and felons are barred from access to US citizenship and dollars. Los Angeles is carved up by internal borders and Homeland Security agents police mobility according to citizenship status. Through its dystopian realism, Puto addresses how US elites’ class warfare has historically relied on racist forms of social control and repression, both within and beyond its national borders. The play closes looking toward a future with armed struggle against the US state on the horizon.
