Abstract

Chapter 1 focuses on how late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholars used scientific methods and arguments to make sense of the Coatlinchan stone in relation to the ravine where it was found. Their work consolidated the stone as a self-contained and therefore potentially portable monument, long before it was physically removed.
