Abstract

Chapter 2 uses interviews, published accounts, media, and archival sources to analyze the role that technology and engineering played in actually moving the Coatlinchan stone and repurposing it as a standing monument in the 1960s. These efforts were very much in line with a developmentalist national state project that imagined public works and state-of-the-art infrastructure as a continuation of an ancient civilization’s quest to control the environment—specifically water.
