Race
Abstract
The conclusion asserts the importance of retaining race as a site of critical inquiry in an era of artificial intelligence (AI). It does so by exploring the tension between how Asian American representation is imagined by the burgeoning multiverse of Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), on one hand, and the mushrooming growth of AI applications in our universe, on the other. By juxtaposing explication of the movie’s treatment of statistical probability as homogenizing and world-destroying with analyses of the limits of an alternative script for the film the author generated with AI, the conclusion identifies fallacies that underwrite the mathematical approach to Asian American representation hyperbolized in AI. To support this argument, the conclusion explains the eugenic and reductive functions of AI, showing how they work at cross-purposes with critical approaches to understanding Asian American subjectivity. The conclusion underscores the importance of critical, not representational, approaches to Asian Americanness.
