Study on the Regeneration and Modification Mechanisms of Cold-Patch Asphalt Using FTIR and AFM
Abstract
To investigate the microscopic interaction mechanisms of rejuvenators and modifiers on aged asphalt within cold-patch asphalt mixtures, this study systematically analyzed the effects of waste engine oil (rejuvenator), SBR latex, and petroleum resin (modifiers) on the chemical structure and micro-morphology of aged asphalt using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The FTIR results indicate that no new functional groups are generated during the rejuvenation and modification processes, suggesting that the modification is a physical blending process. AFM images reveal that waste engine oil effectively “flattens” the rough structure on the surface of aged asphalt, while SBR and petroleum resin further construct a uniform and dense polymer network, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the material. Furthermore, this study establishes a correlation between the evolution of micro-morphology and macroscopic pavement performance, and incorporates the concept of a multi-scale evaluation system, thereby providing microscopic theoretical support for the formulation optimization of cold-patch asphalt rejuvenators.
