Abstract

The economic developments in Europe and the associated increase in mobility demand, as well as the achievement of the climate policy objectives, are indispensable without a transformation of rail transport, which cannot be achieved without the widespread use of digitalization and automation in this transport sector. At the same time, the current labor market situation and the need to replace a dwindling and ageing workforce are key issues for all railway companies to address. In this work, a generational study has been used to identify the characteristics and preferences of the workforce, which can be used as a basis for developing a strategy to make railway companies' jobs more attractive. In this research, data for the population of Hungary and the expected changes in the labor market were investigated and compared. The impact of ongoing and expected rail network developments, digitalization, and automation were investigated, and the number of employees required was determined for the following years. These changes highlight the areas where new competencies should be acquired, due to the changes in employees.
