Abstract

UNDER THE SPELL OF GERMAN AND FRENCH MEDICINE: NINETEENTH-CENTURY ACCOUNTS OF POLISH DOCTORS’ SCIENTIFIC TRIPS TO BERLIN AND PARIS The article presents 19th-century accounts of Polish doctors’ scientific trips to Berlin and Paris. It was in this century that it became fashionable to travel to the most famous European centres of medical research and teaching, places where new medical ideas were born and developed and where the practice of medicine was improved. Doctors published reports of their visits to Berlin and Paris in the journals of the time, informing readers of the innovations used by German and French medics. Today, these 19th-century accounts are an important source of information about the state of medical knowledge at the time, the functioning of hospitals and the teaching of medicine. The authors of some of the reports on the scientific trips were the most eminent Polish medics, who perfectly understood the importance of popularising knowledge of European medicine, because they rightly believed that the reception of foreign medical ideas could positively influence development of the Polish medical art.
