Silica Nanoparticles: Unlocking New Possibilities for Soil and Water Remediation
Abstract
The accelerating pace of industrialization and urbanization has led to profound environmental degradation, marked by the widespread contamination of soil and water resources with heavy metals, organic pollutants, and pathogenic microorganisms. These pollutants pose serious public health risks, contributing to millions of premature deaths globally through cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, and waterborne diseases. While conventional remediation methods (physical, chemical, and biological) have contributed significantly to pollution control, they are often hindered by high operational costs, limited efficiency, and the generation of hazardous byproducts. Nano-remediation has emerged as a cutting-edge solution, offering superior efficiency through the use of highly reactive nanoparticles. Among these, silica nanoparticles (SiO₂ NPs) offer notable advantages due to their environmental compatibility, ease of functionalization, and capacity to support multiple remediation pathways. Their ability to facilitate adsorption, catalytic degradation, photocatalysis, and pollutant immobilization positions them as a versatile platform for soil and water cleanup. Continued advances in synthesis, modification strategies, and safety assessment are essential to maximize their performance while minimizing environmental risks. This review synthesizes current applications of SiO₂ NPs in remediating diverse contaminants, critically compares their performance with other nanomaterials, and highlights existing challenges, ecological considerations, and knowledge gaps requiring further investigation to guide their sustainable use in environmental remediation.
