Abstract

The Esquiline Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli houses, in the third altar of the left nave, a mosaic panel depicting Saint Sebastian. The work is commonly dated to 680 and related to the plague that in that year hit the cities of Rome and Pavia. Although this chronology finds its historical basis in a textual tradition of the modern age, which has long been devoid of any foundation, scholars have nevertheless considered it appropriate to attribute the mosaic to the seventh century, by virtue of certain stylistic comparisons. Starting from similar assumptions, the present study has critically reviewed the dating of the mosaic image of Saint Sebastian by analyzing its iconographic and technical-stylistics, then crossing them with the traces of the saint and with the history of the Roman Basilica in medieval times. Based on the evidence gathered, it is therefore assumed that the mosaic was foreign to its hi storical date set at the 7th century, in favor of a new chronology within the second half of the 11th.
