Abstract

This paper focuses on two predicative multiword having the patterns [Prep + Vinf] or [Prep + Ndevb], which can co-occur with both adjectives and a nouns (e.g. facile a dirsi ‘easy to say’/ difficile a farsi ‘tough to do’; libro da leggere ‘book to read’ / pizza da asporto ‘takeaway pizza’). Starting with the patterns [facile a + Vinf] and [facile da + Vinf] (‘[easy to + Vinf]’), their nature as Tough constructions is analysed first. They are then considered as complex predicates, which allows for a unified treatment of the pattern [da + Vinf] and its modal semantics. Finally, modality is considered as a distinctive feature of the infinitive compared to deverbal nouns, also taking into account the non-finite forms of the Latin verb that have merged into the Italian infinitive.
