Abstract

As a contribution to current research in lexicology and on word classes, the paper proposes a general class of Light Words, thus posing a typical issue of general and typological linguistics. It contains various subclasses, some of which (like Light Verbs and Light Nouns) are already known and extensively studied. After defining the general features of Light Words, the paper takes into consideration also the subclass of Light Adjectives, which perform various functions, such as that of intensifier, and other phrase constructions where a designative noun is semantically “lightened” and used as an adjective (like in “I have a crap job”) with a typical reverse mechanism. The phenomena considered are illustrated with data from several typologically different languages. As a conclusion, a theoretical explanation of the phenomenon of Light Words is proposed in terms of the semiotic property of Flexibility of Reference and Structure.
