Abstract

Words meaning ‘before’ and ‘after’ straddle the borders between adverbs, prepositions and complementizers. This paper begins by exploring the diachronic development of some such items in (Italo-)Romance and Germanic, noting in particular how they often derive from comparative or superlative formations. We consider the implications of these patterns for the synchronic relation between syntactic categories and lexical content.
