Abstract

José Saramago became known to the public especially as a fiction writer, with novels such as Convent Memorial, but he is also the author of several other textual typologies, including five dramatic texts. The intention of this paper is, first, to value this textual typology and make the dramatic texts written by Saramago known to the public, especially his first two works: In the Evening (1979) and What will I do with this book?(1980). Secondly, I intend to survey the various moments of intertextuality that cross the plays, but above all highlight the proverbs, full of popular wisdom, that Saramago knew how to use so well at the right time. Saramago’s theater may, in fact, not captivate by the movements, the strength of the action, but it is after all not what is expected either. The preference clearly goes to the power of the word, to the reflection that the plays invite us to make by telling us stories with a strong true and symbolic character.
