Cair fora do mundo.
Abstract
The chapter analyses Ensaio sobre a Cegueira in relation to the tradition that sees in the despoliation of the human species of some of its specific attributes (the senses, reproductive capacity, mortality) the transformation of the very meaning of civilisation. Ensaio sobre a Cegueira, like M. Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, P.D. James's Children of Men, and De Lillo's Zero K, re-establishes the writings of the end towards that degree to which Homer and Lucretius had raised them, while preserving the historical-documentary trait that the stories of contagion have had with Thucydides, Defoe, Manzoni, and Camus.
