Abstract
In his renowned Discourse of the Statue and the Stone, delivered in Turin in 1997, José Saramago elucidated the importance of allegory within his literary universe. However, another trope stands out: metaphor. This paper presents some of the most significant metaphors found in the novels published during the author’s lifetime, from Manual of Painting and Calligraphy (1977) to Cain (2009). For each of them, the linguistic structure and narrative function will be analyzed, and, in conclusion, a dialogue will be established with those of another major Portuguese author, José Maria Eça de Queirós (1845–1900). The aim is to highlight similarities and differences in the hermeneutics and textual construction of these stylistic devices.
