Abstract

In the richness of Saramago's intertextuality, I intercepted in this contribution some of the dynamics related to the mode of preparation for the writing of the Portuguese Nobel and the influences of odeporic literature within the short novel A viagem do elefante. Thus, an attempt was made to investigate within the narrative the tools that allowed the Portuguese writer to enter the world of the pachyderm (by tracing materials at the Fundação José Saramago in Lisbon and at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal), as well as the relationship between travel and reality, between travel and temporal transposition, between travel and reflection on human categories, connecting the writing with the sources traced by the author and with his background of literary inspiration. From this contact with the diversified writings that the Portuguese narrator draws on, it was possible to evince on the one hand the reworking capacity of the writing itself and on the other hand the socio-cultural background of the author filtered through well-known narratives of Portuguese sailings as well as shipwreck stories. The tools the author draws on are identified through research he has carried out to produce a narrative that conforms as closely as possible to the historical reality described. In this way, it is possible to investigate even implicit and unintentional irradiations on the text under consideration and to observe the implications of reinterpretation that invest both the description of the experience of mobility in space and the intersections of historical and literary perspectives, for the observation of that phenomenon of all-Saramago hybridism between scientific, popular and narrative texts, classical paradigms and personal experience.
