Mislocating the Rupture: On Alain Badiou's Reading of Convergence A Critical Note on Alain Badiou's Reading of Convergence
Abstract
This note examines Alain Badiou’s claim that modern mathematical notions such as convergence and limits undermine the classical concept of number as a collection of units. While accepting Badiou’s mathematical diagnosis that limits cannot be understood as additive accumulations, the paper challenges the philosophical inference that this incompatibility entails an ontological collapse of the concept of number. It argues instead that the tension revealed by limits indicates a mislocation of rupture: if incompatibility with additive construction were sufficient to warrant such a collapse, the decisive break would already have occurred with the introduction of rational numbers. The note proposes reading the limit not as evidence of ontological failure, but as a diagnostic marker of a shift in the domain of application of the term “number.”
