Abstract

Presbycusis is a bilateral symmetrical hearing loss related to age. The deprivation of auditory input caused by the degeneration of the inner ear structure is the main reason for the remodeling of the auditory center. At the level of the central nervous system, it leads to the upregulation of central gain and the imbalance of excitation-inhibition, thereby causing symptoms such as tinnitus and auditory hypersensitivity. At the cellular and molecular levels, it can induce cross-channel remodeling of the auditory cortex and other multiple senses, leading to a decline in speech ability, increased cognitive load, and an increased risk of cognitive decline, etc. On the other hand, central remodeling also provides a theoretical basis for the clinical intervention of hearing aid devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. This study aims to systematically review the auditory center remodeling mechanism from homeostatic plasticity disorder to network rhythm disorder in patients with presbycusis, providing a reference for optimizing the management of patients with presbycusis.
