Microbending-loss optical fiber sensor utilizing a scintillating fiber as both a light source and power generator
Abstract
We present a proof-of-concept microbending-loss–based optical fiber temperature sensor that operates without an external light source by using a scintillating fiber. Ambient illumination is converted into guided scintillation light, enabling simultaneous temperature sensing and energy harvesting within a single fiber platform. The normalized emission intensity decreases monotonically with increasing temperature, allowing temperature estimation. Power-generation tests show increased open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current with additional scintillating fibers. Although demonstrated under simplified conditions, the results establish the fundamental feasibility of integrating self-powered sensing and photovoltaic functionality for autonomous fiber-optic monitoring systems.
