Abstract

The internet has created a quantitative and qualitative difference in how we watch pornography today. In synthesizing the existing scholarly literature, this chapter provides a baseline for analyzing fundamental questions of online pornographic spectatorship for film and media studies. It examines how the internet reconstitutes pornographic spectatorship, major conceptual and methodological points of view that shape the field, the limits of the field and its approaches to this area of research, and how viewing online pornography follows and departs from broader trends in internet consumption.
