The Case of Tizia Jus: An Unmade Film in Post-War Austria
Abstract
The unmade film project discussed in this chapter dates from 1946-47 and originated in Vienna, Austria. It was supposed to star and was specifically written for the 1930s film star Franziska Gaal. Because of her Jewish heritage, she was forced into exile when the National Socialists came to power. After starring in three Hollywood films, she returned to Budapest, where she escaped persecution and survived. Newspapers heralded her post-war comeback in Austria in late 1946, alongside another prestigious actor projected to return from exile, Adolf Wohlbrück (in the UK: Anton Walbrook). So, what contributed to this film never being made?
