Using sensor fish to examine fish friendliness of flood pumps
Abstract
Hollis Kinnard was a semi-finalist in the 2025 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Hollis presented their research, “Using Sensor Fish to Examine Fish Friendliness of Flood Pumps.” This research examines the impact of fish-friendly flood pumps on juvenile salmon, with early results indicating that these pumps still cause harm to fish. The goal is to create a best practices document to help flood pump managers upgrade infrastructure to better protect salmon during their migration. Hollis Kinnard is completing their MSc in Forestry in the Department of Forestry under the supervision of Dr. Scott Hinch.
