A Pilot Randomised Study: Enhancing Meta-Cognitive Learning using GenAI in Essay Writing Workshops for Undergraduate Students
Abstract
Thisinteractive workshop shares findings from a student-led projectinvestigating the use of GenerativeArtificial Intelligence (GenAI)to enhance meta-cognitive learninginundergraduate education. Co-created with BSc Psychology students, theinterventioninvolved student-led recruitmentandworkshop delivery by a psychology lecturer. First-year psychology students (n=53) were randomised to either a traditional essay writing workshop without GenAI or a GenAI-supported workshop using Microsoft Copilot. Both conditions focusedonkey aspects of meta-cognition to support essay writing, including reflection, planning, learning strategies, andmonitoring. Both groups showed significant improvementsinmeta-cognitive awarenessandreported high levels of engagementandsatisfaction. For thisconferenceworkshop, the project student will briefly present the research designandkey findings, followed by a hands-onsimulation led by the supervisor who delivered the workshops. Participants will complete a sample activity using Mentimeter and Microsoft Copilot via mobile or laptop devices to experience how GenAI can support meta-cognitive skill developmentinacademic writing. The session will conclude with discussion around practical applicationsandchallenges of using GenAIindifferent teaching contexts. Participants will leave with practical ideasandinspiration for developingAI-supported meta-cognitive learning activities within their own disciplines. This session will appeal to educators interested in pedagogical approaches that incorporate GenAI, as well as learners interested in examples of GenAI-supported teaching.
