Reimagining Student Engagement through Intelligent Systems: A Human–AI Collaborative Model for Creative Learning Environments
Abstract
Student engagement is a strong predictor of academic success, yet higher education institutions continue to face challenges in sustaining motivation, creativity, and reflective learning within increasingly digital classrooms. This paper introduces the Human–AI Collaborative Engagement Model (HACEM), a human-centred framework that integrates accessible AI-supported tools with educator judgement to support meaningful, ethical, and responsive student engagement. Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for teaching expertise, HACEM conceptualises engagement as a collaborative process in which human insight and AI-supported reflection work together to enhance learning experiences. The study details the development and pilot implementation of HACEM within a self-directed undergraduate Writing Architecture module in the United Arab Emirates, involving sixteen students over a full academic semester. Using a design-based research approach, the study draws on student survey data and reflective interview responses to examine how AI-supported writing influenced engagement, critical reflection, and perceptions of authorship. Findings suggest improvements in participation, reflective depth, and learner confidence, with students perceiving AI not as a surveillance mechanism but as a supportive cognitive scaffold that encouraged autonomy and creative thinking. While grounded in a specific institutional context, HACEM is intentionally designed as a transferable framework, offering adaptable principles that can inform ethical, empathetic, and human-centred AI integration across disciplines and institutions.
