Abstract

This study tracks the public activities of František Kovárna (1905–1952), an important personality of the history of education during the First and Second Czechoslovak Republic and the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia. Unlike earlier studies, which dealt with Kovárna’s role in the history of art, this contribution focuses on his hitherto little-studied journalistic activities and work in the editing boards of art periodicals, especially the Svazky úvah a studií. The author shows how Kovárna linked these activities with his university studies and later with his academic work at university. Analysed are also his perspicacious insights into totalitarian regimes and into life in the First Czechoslovak Republic.
