Abstract

This article uses the musical metaphors of musical mastery and polyphony as a means of theological reflection on the nature of Christian life. Polyphony in music refers to multiple independent melodies being played simultaneously. Within the context of Christian life, metaphors can illustrate how diverse life journeys and experiences coexist harmoniously without one dominating or overshadowing the others. Various melodies are to be discovered and cultivated within the church (e.g., spiritual growth and communal worship), in the broader human community (e.g., acts of service and social justice), and throughout the whole creation (e.g., environmental stewardship and care for the planet and all living beings). The melodies within the church and the world intertwine to create a harmony that reflects the presence of God.
