Vittore, vescovo di Capua (541–554), lettore, annotatore e revisore di codici
Abstract
The philological activity of Victor, bishop of Capua, is exceptionally well documented, primarily through the Codex Fuldensis – a manuscript transmitting the first Latin Harmony of the Gospels, which he revised and corrected in 546/547 and in which several of his autograph subscriptions survive. This article first examines the defining features of this codex, offering a new analysis of its subscriptions to elucidate the nature of Victor’s textual interventions. It then identifies a previously unrecognised subscription by Victor, partially preserved in a Carolingian copy of the Expositum in Heptateuchum by John, Deacon of the Roman Church (sixth century), and explores the implications of this discovery for the textual history of the work. Finally, the article suggests possible avenues for further research that may lead to the identification of additional evidence of Victor’s engagement with manuscripts.
