Nobility, Conflicts, and Buildings in Italian Cities (c. 1050–1300)
Abstract
This paper focuses on the construction of private towers and noble compounds as material expressions of power, competition, and identity from the late eleventh to the early fourteenth century. Drawing on both narrative sources and recent historiography, it distinguishes the urban landscapes of central-northern Italy — where agnatic lineages and egalitarian inheritance fostered fragmentation and rivalry — from the southern regions, which followed different kinship and property models. Fortified buildings marked noble dominance within the city, evolving from purely military structures to multi-functional spaces symbolizing lineage, status, and alliances. By analysing building typologies, spatial distribution, and the social practices connected to their use and meaning, this research sheds new light on the political culture and social fabric of Italian communes. It argues that Italy’s distinctive urban conflict culture was not only political but profoundly architectural in nature. It reveals the exceptional nature of Italian cities, where aristocratic towers and compounds proliferated as expressions of intra-elite conflict. Comparative surveys show their relative absence elsewhere in Mediterranean Europe, due to differing political structures, inheritance practices, and the limited militarization of urban aristocracies. In Italy, self-government, dense noble populations, and internalized political rivalries fostered investment in fortified architecture. This phenomenon stemmed from a unique nexus of competition, identity, and autonomy, making the Italian urban fabric a lasting imprint of medieval aristocratic conflict.
