Abstract

One of the central topics in contemporary epistemology is the norm of assertion. This norm concerns the standards that determine when an assertion is appropriate or successful. Many philosophers regard it as indispensable for understanding our epistemic practices, largely because of its close connection to testimony, which is widely examined as a primary means of transmitting knowledge. Since testimony typically takes the form of assertions, its reliability and capacity to convey knowledge may depend on whether the relevant assertions satisfy the norm of assertion. On this view, testimony can serve as a source of knowledge because assertions are made in ways that conform to the norm. Despite its significance, the content and status of the norm of assertion remain contested. Philosophers have advanced a variety of competing accounts, which makes it difficult to capture the overall structure of the debate or to identify clear points of consensus. Disagreement also arises with respect to how the norm connects to broader issues--for instance, whether speech in fiction can count as assertion, or how assertion relates to other epistemic issues or concepts. This paper therefore aims to survey the main positions on the norm of assertion, to clarify their differences, and to evaluate which views are currently more defensible. By mapping the field in this way, the discussion can proceed on a clearer basis, helping to advance debate in epistemology. Moreover, since the norm of assertion is closely linked not only to testimony and knowledge transmission but also to broader questions in the philosophy of language, a clearer understanding of its role is expected to benefit future research across related areas.
