Acknowledgments

Work on this project began with insights derived from a kind of intellectual wandering, as I explored materials at the Hanna Holborn Gray Special Collections Research Center at the University of Chicago in preparation for presentations to my students and prospective students there.It continued through other kinds of wandering in churches and museums in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, and along branching pathways of references and insights.
